Gregor Smith was born in Renton, Scotland in 1944.

He studied drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art under Sir Robin Philipson and James Cumming 1962-66. A post -graduate scholarship with a highly-commended endorsement was followed by a travelling scholarship to Florence and Rome 1966-7.
Gregor was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1983 and is currently a member of council.

Until recently he lived in Kilcreggan, Argyll and Bute, in a house overlooking the Clyde estuary with superb views of Arran, Holy Loch, Loch Long with Gareloch just round the corner and extensive open vistas towards Glasgow up river. Most of his subject matter is drawn from these lochs, the surrounding hills and coastal edges. Variations in weather patterns, atmospheric changes and subtle changes of colour, shapes and textures all form vital compositional elements.

Selected exhibitions include the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours, the Royal Watercolour Society C21, London, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, London, the Scottish Arts Council, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Project Arts Centre, Dublin, the Society of Scottish Artists.
