Born in Harwich 1940, Ian studied fine art at Colchester School of Art and the Royal College of Art where he won the prize for Landscape Painting.

He has held many exhibitions in East Anglia and London including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions. His pictures are represented in both private and public collections in the U.K. and abroad including London’s Guildhall Art Gallery, Sheffield City Art Gallery, Essex County Hall, Doncaster City Art Gallery, University of Essex and Colchester Borough Council.

His many commissioned works undertaken include a series of Birmingham cityscapes for Ernst and Young accountants and River Thames views for Tate and Lyle Sugar Company.
He taught at St Martin’s School of Art, Norwich School of Art and Colchester School of Art and Design. Painting and drawing workshops include courses run at Flatford Mill Field Centre; The Plume School, Maldon; Colbaynes School, Clacton-on-Sea and the Broadlands Art Centre in Norfolk.

Ian served for a number of years as a selector for the Colchester Art Society and is now an honorary member. He also served for a number of years as a selector for the Digby Gallery.


He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Essex University in 2009, for his contribution to East Anglian visual arts.

In 2010 Ian held a major retrospective exhibition of his work - "A Life Drawing" at the Minories Art Gallery, Colchester.
