Mats Rydstern, is very well known in Sweden, and is featured in many important collections in his homeland. He was born in in Stockholm in 1952, and educated at Valands School of Fine Art in Gothenburg University from 1973 -1979.

Mats is a fine technician of considerable versatility and vision. Although a noted portrait painter, his exhibited work comprises mostly his landscapes, nudes, and beautiful still life works.

His still life work has an identifiable Scandinavian sparseness, whilst his landscapes follow a broader European tradition, even if they are often obviously Swedish views. Both are distinguished by brilliant treatment of light, a particular feature of Mats’ painting.

Throughout his work, the precision of the portrait painter is always there, but it is overlaid with the free execution of an artist confident in his own ability.

Since 1995, Mats has had 23 solo exhibitions in galleries throughout Sweden, and rarely shows in mixed exhibitions, a testimony to his ability to fill a gallery with varied and challenging work, and also to his desire to keep developing and moving on.

Lime Tree Gallery is the only gallery outside Sweden to represent Mats, and he has built up a considerable following in this country. Mats’ solo exhibition in Lime Tree Gallery, Long Melford in 2009 was followed by other successful solo exhibitions in our Bristol gallery in 2012, 2015. and 2018
