Originally from Shropshire, Sam Cartman now lives and works in Dumfries and Galloway.

He trained in Cumbria College of Arts and Design from 1998 to 2001 achieving an Honours Degree in Fine Art , having completing a Foundation Course in Art and Design in Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology.

Sam Cartman's ideas for work are shaped by image and composition. His subject matter starts as a personal choice from simply looking at things. This serves as a basis for his involvement with the paint and from then on, he lets his interaction with the paint take over. This process allows Sam to show in his paintings, something of the place he is in, whether it's the landscape of Shropshire, or more recently, the urban environment of Glasgow and the landscapes of the West Coast.

"There is a poetic sparseness to Cartman’s paintings of wide open spaces, in the skies or the sculpted buildings which look as if they have been there for all time". (Jan Patience, The Glasgow Herald)
